Community volunteers are never more appreciated than they are during the holiday season. While volunteers are necessary year-round, to help those less fortunate in our local community, the need increases during this time of year. This is not only because of the holidays but because of the harsh winter conditions we see in Minnesota. There are several ways to volunteer your time, and we hope you continue your volunteer efforts into the new year. Here are a few samples.

Ramsey County Meals on Wheels

The Meals on Wheels program of Ramsey County delivers over 700 meals every day to the elderly and disabled individuals who find it difficult to leave their homes. It takes just one hour to deliver 10 to 12 meals on a pre-determined route. Simply sign up here to volunteer with Meals on Wheels and let them know how often you are available.

Simpson Housing Services

There are many ways in which you can help support the homeless who rely on Simpson Housing Services during the holiday season. This community organization runs on grants, as well as donations from the community. Running a fundraiser can help those who are homeless find suitable housing as well as employment that will allow them to keep that housing. Donation drives for food items, clothing, baby care items and even holiday gifts for children can go a long way toward making a cold holiday much warmer for a family in need. As a group, you might even buy, prepare, and serve a meal for those staying at Simpson.

Soldier’s Angels

While the Soldier’s Angels organization operates many military support programs, including arranging pen pals for those stationed overseas, the Adopt-A-Family program needs volunteering individuals or groups, especially around the holidays. This program allows you to adopt a family that is affected by a service-connected deployment or disability or is a family of a US veteran. When you adopt a family, you help them celebrate the holidays in a way they wouldn’t be able to without your support.

There are dozens of other volunteer opportunities in the St. Paul area, and we hope you will give back to your community in a way that best matches your abilities and your passions. JCI St. Paul is committed to supporting our community. If you are as well, we would love to know more about your efforts.
